Known generically as a posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (P-IOL) and referred to as implantable contact lenses outside of the United States, the Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer® Lens) and the new Visian TICL (Toric Implantable Collamer Lens)* are becoming a popular choice in refractive error correction. The advantages of the Visian ICL are evident:
There have been over 55,000 Visian ICLs implanted worldwide. Extensive development has been undertaken to deliver the most recent version of the Visian ICL - V4. Version 4 of the Visian ICL is optimally vaulted to produce consistent clearance from the crystalline lens, an improvement over earlier versions of the lens. Ongoing development of sizing methods has virtually eliminated previous problems due to inadequate vaulting through undersizing.
The Visian ICL is currently available outside the United States in three models: ICM for myopia, ICH for hyperopia, and TICM, or Visian TICL*, for myopia. The Visian Toric ICL is currently under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The myopic version of the Visian ICL is currently the only model approved for use in the United States.

The Visian ICL is a phakic intraocular lens made from Collamer, a lens material exclusive to STAAR Surgical Company. The unique Collamer material consists of a copolymer (of HEMA and benzophenone monomers), specially purified collagen, and water. The biological composition of the Visian ICL creates excellent biocompatibility with the eye.
In order to reduce contact of the Visian ICL with the central anterior capsule of the crystalline lens, the Visian ICL integrated a forward vault into its plate-haptic design with a central convex/concave optical zone.
The optic and overall diameters of the Visian ICL vary with refractive power, ranging from 4.9 mm (optic) / 12.1 mm (overall) to 5.8 mm (optic) / 13.7 mm (overall). (Please note that all measurements are in BSS, unless stated otherwise.)
The Visian ICL lenses are foldable, allowing for posterior chamber injection through a microscopic incision of 3.5 mm or smaller. When properly placed, the Visian ICL should be positioned completely within the posterior chamber between the iris and crystalline lens. This placement allows the refractive function of the lens to correct moderate to severe (-3 to -20 diopters) myopia.

Patients must be 21 - 45 years of age with an anterior chamber depth (ACD) 3.00mm or greater, and a stable refractive history within 0.5 diopter for 1 year prior to implantation.
