Comprised of highly purified sodium hyaluronate, STAARVISC II is a sterile transparent viscoelastic gel. The function of the viscoelastic solution is to safeguard delicate tissues inside the eye during cataract surgery. (Please note that STAARVISC II is currently only available in the United States.) The STAARVISC II viscoelastic solution contains 12 mg/ml of high molecular weight (greater than 1 million daltons) sodium hyaluronate dissolved in physiological saline. The resting state viscosity of STAARVISCII viscoelastic gel is 105,000 cps (105 Pa s) at 25° C. The solution's osmolality is approximately 320 milliosmoles.

STAARVISC II, a sterile viscoelastic gel containing 12 mg of sodium hyaluronate, 9 mg of sodium chloride, and sterile water per milliliter, is packaged in a disposable glass syringe. Each syringe contains 0.8 ml of sodium hyaluronate dissolved in physiological saline. If needed to adjust pH, sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid may be added to the viscoelastic solution.
After sterilization and filtration of the solution, STAARVISC II viscoelastic gel is transferred to syringes. The syringes are then sealed and the final packaging is sterilized by irradiation. Packages contain sterile and nonpyrogenic viscoelastic solution in unopened and undamaged pouches. Do not use if package is opened or damaged.
